The Messiah Does a Bunk

From 'The Freethinker' from May 1987.

We know that he went to Leeds and bought a house there.

Mari-Ann Barrett was one of the four women who were with John Yarr in the Divine Light Mission who formed the nucleus of the emerging cult.

  1. Hi Andrew, do you know anything about this? I stumbled upon it the other day. At the bottom of the article that describes the evolution of the New Lightwave the guy (David) gives the link to the organization. They say they don’t charge anything.

  2. I was aware of the esotericmeanings site but I wasn't aware of this page. They say that they can conduct initiations remotely. I don't believe that someone needs to have initiation to see the inner light. It isn't a spiritual energy it is something produced by the mind. I wonder what they mean by people spontaneously awakening.

  3. I have been finding out more about these people. There are two people called Nick and Mary Howell who kept in contact with John Yarr after his cult broke up in 1986. They formed their own cult in Manchester and initiated lots of people. They used to have mass initiations, like the one in Merseyside in 2018. They call their group Lightwave. So this is different from Yarr's own new cult in Leeds called 1Meditation and Mark Zaretti's cult called The Way Back.

  4. There are some people who think that the Lightwave group led by Nick and Mary Howell isn't a cult and doesn't have a guru. They think that it avoids the pitfalls of the former Lifewave. However, there are two things that make me think this is not true. First of all, on one of their numerous 'esotericmeanings' pages they refer to John Yarr as the Master. Secondly, according to Mark Zaretti on one of his YouTube videos, people in Lightwave got to see John Yarr.

"And, you know, they used to say, before you go, make sure you’ve got a good question. Because I think. Because what I learned years later is, if you didn’t have a good spiritual question, he’d just talk about anything.
The weather, who’s moved into the house down the road, anything, really. And it’s understandable maybe, because he was meeting lots and lots of people."

If it turns out that John Yarr has been engaged in criminal activity from 1986 onwards then they will have to take responsibility for that as his enablers.
